Machine Grip Squeeze
Also known as: grip machine, hand gripper machine
A gripper machine lets you load crushing strength in measured increments and watch the number move, which plate pinches and towel hangs never offer. Since the handles travel a fixed path, it isolates the squeeze itself; work it in higher-rep sets or timed squeezes, and expect quick early progress as your hands learn the handle spacing.
How to do the Machine Grip Squeeze
- Adjust the seat height and grip the handles of the leverage machine.
- Keep your back straight and your feet flat on the ground.
- Exhale and squeeze the handles, contracting your forearms.
- Hold the contraction for a second, then slowly release and return to the starting position.
- Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Tip: Use timed holds of 20 to 40 seconds and rest fully between them.

Common mistakes
- Squeezing with the fingertips only — wrap the whole hand and squeeze from the palm, since a fingertip grip fatigues quickly and trains less.
- Pinch plates that slip — start with smooth plates light enough to hold for 20 seconds and add time before weight.
- Holding the breath — breathe normally through timed holds so the rest of the body stays relaxed.
- Training grip before pulling work — do it at the end of the session so it does not weaken your rows and deadlifts.
Sets, reps and where it fits
| Goal | Sets × reps | Rest |
|---|---|---|
| Muscle growth | 3–4 × 10–15 | 60–90 s |
| Endurance / finisher | 2–3 × 15–20 | 45 s |
| Strength | Not ideal — pick a compound lift for the same muscle | — |
Grip work goes at the very end of a session after all pulling is done. Superset plate pinches with wrist curls using the same plates.

Frequently asked questions
What muscles does the Machine Grip Squeeze work?
The Machine Grip Squeeze primarily works the forearms. It also involves the biceps and triceps, which assist the movement and stabilise the joints.
Is the Machine Grip Squeeze good for beginners?
Yes. The Machine Grip Squeeze is rated beginner: it uses a machine and the movement is simple to learn. Start light, focus on the full range of motion and add load once every rep looks the same.
What can I do instead of the Machine Grip Squeeze?
If you cannot do the Machine Grip Squeeze, try the Plate Pinch Hold. Each of them trains the forearms through a similar movement, so you can swap them in without changing the rest of the workout.
How many sets and reps should I do?
It depends on your goal. For the Machine Grip Squeeze, a sensible starting point is muscle growth: 3–4 × 10–15 with 60–90 s rest; endurance / finisher: 2–3 × 15–20 with 45 s rest. Do it after your compound lifts. It is a finishing movement, not the main event.
