Running in place from a high plank splits the work between a racing heart and a trunk that must not bounce as the knees alternate. Pace is the whole variable: fast intervals of twenty to forty seconds for conditioning, or slower, fuller knee drives when core control is the goal.
How to do the Mountain Climber
- Start in a high plank position with your hands directly under your shoulders and your body in a straight line.
- Engage your core and bring your right knee towards your chest, then quickly switch and bring your left knee towards your chest.
- Continue alternating legs in a running motion, keeping your hips low and your core engaged.
- Maintain a steady pace and breathe evenly throughout the exercise.
- Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Tip: Keep the head neutral and look at the floor a foot in front of your hands.

Mountain climbers at speed are a conditioning movement and push the heart rate up within a few seconds.
Common mistakes
- Hips piking up — the body should stay in a plank as the legs move; if the backside rises the abs have stopped working.
- Shoulders drifting behind the hands — keep the shoulders stacked over the wrists so the core, not the arms, holds the position.
- Knees dragging — hover the knees an inch off the floor and keep them there for the whole distance.
- Sprinting from the start — build speed only once you can hold a flat back for the whole set.

Frequently asked questions
What muscles does the Mountain Climber work?
The Mountain Climber primarily works the cardio. It also involves the abs, delts and triceps, which assist the movement and stabilise the joints.
Is the Mountain Climber good for beginners?
Yes. The Mountain Climber is rated beginner: it uses no equipment beyond your bodyweight and the movement is simple to learn. Start light, focus on the full range of motion and add load once every rep looks the same.
What can I do instead of the Mountain Climber?
If you cannot do the Mountain Climber, try the Bear Crawl. Each of them trains the cardio through a similar movement, so you can swap them in without changing the rest of the workout.
How many sets and reps should I do?
It depends on your goal. For the Mountain Climber, a sensible starting point is warm-up: 3–5 min easy; conditioning: 6–10 × 30 s hard / 60 s easy; endurance: 15–30 min steady. Put intervals after strength work or on a separate day so they do not eat into your lifting.
